Christina Mitchell
Christina Mitchell is physician scientist located in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Monash University, Melbourne. The major research direction of her group has been to characterise the metabolic pathways that regulate the turnover of membrane bound phosphoinositide signals, in particular phosphoinositide 3-kinase generated lipid signals in human cancer and embryonic development. Her group were among the first to purify and clone the inositol polyphosphate 5-phosphatases (ten family members) and to delineate the phosphoinositide substrates, binding partners and intracellular location of these phosphatases. Recently the laboratory have characterised the phenotype of murine knock-out models of more recently characterised 5-phosphatases and the role these phosphatases play in human developmental syndromes, in which several family members are mutated.
